The Minor in Leadership Studies provides instruction in leadership theories and their applications and is open to all undergraduate students in any field of study who have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Drawing from social psychology, philosophy, organizational development and administration, communication, and educational theory, this minor enhances your understanding of the social and organizational processes that influence effective leadership across diverse contexts.

How is the Leadership Studies Minor different from the Illinois Leadership Center's Leadership Certificate program?
A significant emphasis within the Minor is the academic study of leadership theory, while the emphasis of the Leadership Certificate Program is successful leadership practice. The Minor in Leadership Studies will appear on your University of Illinois transcript, while the certificate will not.
While the Leadership Certificate requires one or two leadership courses, the Minor-approved courses are specific to studying leadership with a theoretical lens.The Minor will also include a cross-campus Faculty Advisory Committee to ensure academic rigor.

How many semesters will it take me to complete the minor?
Typically students take 3-4 semesters to complete the Minor in Leadership Studies. The minor requires a total of seventeen or eighteen semester hours: nine hours of required foundation courses, five to six hours of elective context courses, and three hours in a capstone course.
If I have not yet declared a major, can I still take courses in the minor?
Yes! Start with LEAD 260. That is the pre-requisite course for the rest of the required courses in the Minor. Then take one or more of the elective courses. Once you have declared a major and have earned at least 30 credit hours, you can complete the Statement of Intent for the minor and continue completing the requirements..
